Race Date: 06/24/2001 This week's venue: Rockford Speedway, Rockford, IL Champ Karts Pushing the Limits at the Burris Circle Tour Champ Kart Classic
Star Champ Kart drivers pushed their karts to the limit in the first annual Burris Circle Tour Champ Kart Classic. By the end of the day Mike Slabenak, Jr. had the checkered flag in hand but getting it wasn't easy. Near the halfway point of the 25 lap race, Justin Lynch, Nick Baran and Mike Kuzniar all lost power and Aaron Phillips blew his motor in spectacular fashion spewing metal and oil across the track. The remaining drivers worked their way through the junkyard and got lined up for the second half of the race. Jack Benson, Jr. and Mike Slabenak, Jr. ran side by side for the next 11 laps with Mark Kuzniar and Jason Krage just looking for an opening. On lap 23 coming out of turn 4 Reid Nuttall lost a front tire that came to rest in the middle of the racing line bringing out the yellow flag and setting the field up for a 1 lap dash. The line-up was Benson, Slabenak, Kuzniar, Krage and Nichole Phillips. With the drop of the green flag Benson's kart just didn't get going and Slabenak grabbed the outside line to go by. Krage went to the inside to pass Kuzniar and Benson in a thrilling finish. The final order was Slabenak, Krage, Kuzniar, Benson and Nichole Phillips. Mickey Kudlicki jumped out to a big lead in the Jr. Champ Sportsman feature. Frank James Slabenak and Sara O'Dell battled for second with Frank James faster in the corner and O'Dell catching and passing on the straight. Frank James held on coming down towards the finish line to take second. O'Dell was third and Jessica Kudlicki was fourth. The Jr. Champ class saw another close finish with Gina Mooi taking home the championship trophy. Tyler Baran, making his way from the back of the pack moved up to finish second just ahead of Nick O'Dell. Vince Cooper, in his first race at the Burris Circle Tour finished fourth. Jake Humphries maintains the overall points lead in the series by winning the Sr. Lite Feature. He has a narrow 30 point lead that could evaporate with just one bad day. Ryan Rockhold was second in the Sr. Lites, Joe Moser finished third with Richard McGill and Cale Wyse rounding out the top 5. Al Pierschalla also pushed the limit of his kart that ran in several classes and took a narrow victory over Denise Kruse and Ken Lishamer in the 4 Cycle Sportsman class. J.J. Adams and John Hunley finished fourth and fifth respectively. The Briggs Medium class is always racing on the edge. This class has depth and most of the field is a threat to win. Brandon Hill led the entire race, but had to fend off a pack right behind him. Anthony Danta made a move to pass for the checkered and left a tiny opening for Jay Gough. The three karts came across side by side with Hill nosing out Gough and Danta. Josh Stahl, was less than a kart length behind the winner and finished fourth. Mike Fox recovered from a terrible heat race to lead 14 laps in the Sr. Heavy class. Anthony Danta made a great pass on the last lap to take the lead. Ken Paulson and Rick Simpson finished third and fourth. A full field of Kid Karts took to the track. Mackenzie Piller, Derrick Gough, Austin Hintt, Colton Clevenger, Ryan Winchester and Michael Jessup showed the big guys how it was done - passing, drafting and having a great day on a sunny, summer afternoon. Clay Kliem continues to dominate the Jr. Yamaha class. Carly Mandarino, Brian Ellis and Amanda Preo continue to improve and are sure to give Clay a run for it next week at Lake Geneva. In similar fashion, Jay Gough got out to a big lead in the Yamaha Sportsman Lites. Eric Freiberg ran second and Kelly Mandarino worked her way up through the pack to finish third. The Jr. Briggs classes tested the limits of driving skill with Adam Carlson coming out on top this week in the Jr. I class and tying second-place finisher Billy Hulbert in the season points. Jordon Thiel and Ryan Marshall were close behind. Brian Freiberg won the first heat race in Jr. III and mixed it up with Jeff Everts, Matt Atkinson and Cory Domenick in the feature. Everts led most of the race and Freiberg held on to second place with 2 laps to go. Atkinson made a fine inside pass to finish second and Freiberg finished third. The next event for the Burris
