Race Date: 8/26/2001 This week's venue: Lake Geneva Raceway Jr. 2 Cycles Rev it up at Lake Geneva Raceway It sounded like a swarm of bees invaded the Lake Geneva Raceway on Sunday as the Burris Circle Tour High Rev Special Event wound up. The event showcased the driving skills of the Kid Kart and Jr. Yamaha drivers. The Tour welcomed 13 Kid Kart drivers for the biggest race of the year. After driver introductions and a pace lap, the 5-7 year olds started the long 10-lap feature race by going 5 wide into turn one. Jacob Sekey, Bobby Yonkee and Mackenzie Pillar got off to a fast start and moved away from the pack. Derrick Gough’s kart didn’t start and crew chief, Jay Gough got Derrick on his way, but a half a lap down. Derrick quickly moved up through the field to finish in fourth place. Jacob, the feature winner, is an accomplished racer as a first grader from Burleigh Elementary School in Brookfield, Wisconsin. He has won over 20 races on four different tracks. The second place finisher was Bobby Yonkee, who has also raced at four tracks. Bobby has placed first at three of the tracks and second at the other one. Mackenzie Pillar, the third place finisher is a second grader at Dixon Elementary school and has won several times this year. Jessica Brannam, a fifth grader from Johnsburg Junior High, won the third feature in a row in the Jr. Yamaha class. She jumped out to an early lead and stretched it to over a half a lap at the finish. The race for second place was very tight with Clay Kliem running in second for most of the race. Rylee Bohlen, Brian Ellis and Carly Madarino were right behind Clay just waiting for a chance to pass. After the white flag dropped, Rylee made a move to the outside to pass and Clay moved up the track as well. This left the inside wide open and Brian Ellis powered his way into second place. Clay, Rylee and Carly Mandarino rounded out the top five. The Jr. I class is getting ready for the 6th Annual Purple Shootout scheduled for September 9th. For a while, the fourteen karts looked like seven pairs of two. Tanner Bohlen and Tyler Peterson were out in the lead, but the Billy Hulbert / Chris Windom pair moved right up behind. The draft then broke up and Hulbert and Windom whipped to the front and Peterson took over third place. Tanner was left to fend off the traffic right behind him. Just a kart length behind the leaders Adam Carlson and Jordon Thiel were battling it out for the last trophy position. At the checkers it was Hulbert, Windom, Peterson, Bohlen and Carlson. The Sr. Briggs classes highlighted the excitement of karting with all 4 class winners winning by less than the width of the finish line. The crowd thought they were seeing in triplicate as Joe Moser, Ryan Rockhold and Ricky Johnson lined up their white karts in a train around the 1/3 mile progressively banked oval. The karts went around the track for 14 laps without a lot of action. Then on turn 4 of the final lap, Rockhold tried to pass on the inside, but Moser wasn’t about to give up the inside line. Then the two karts drifted toward the outside going side-by-side. This left an opening for Johnson using the inside line and the three karts streaked across the finish line in a virtual dead heat. Moser barely managed to hold on to the win. Rockhold, Johnson, Humphrey and Brandon Eash finished second through fifth respectively. Jay Gough and Scott Mayborne ran wheel-to-wheel for 15 laps in the Sr. Medium class. Anthony Danta made several attempts to pass but wasn’t fast enough to win today. Mayborne didn’t pass post race inspection so the final order was Gough, Danta, Nikki Yepsen and Chris Lishamer. The 4-cycle Sportsman class was anybody’s race. Scott Henry won the first heat race, J.J. Adams took the second heat race and Denise Kruse, the class point’s leader, took the third. They all had their eye on the victory. In the feature, the lead changed several times and Henry held out for the win. The Sr. Heavies also had a photo finish with Scott Mayborne inching out Anthony Danta for the victory. Andy Jones finished less than a kart length behind in third. The Yamaha Sportsman Lite class grows each week with new faces, old friends and lot of high rev racing action. In today’s race, Eric Frieberg had to make his way back from a weak start and patiently started picking off the others one by one. Al Wagner, the second place finisher, held off a strong challenge by Dave Hammell and Jake Mogan. Jimmy Johnson looked like he was going to add another feature trophy to the case by winning the first and second heat races in the Jr. III class. Jeff Everts wasn’t going to give up points that easily and got a great start to move to the front. Jeff never gave up the lead. The battle for second was intense. Jimmy Johnson, Ray Mooi and Billy Hulbert passed and repassed each other for the entire race. The finishing order was Everts in first, then Johnson, Hulbert and Mooi crossing nearly at the same time. In Champ Kart action, Mike Slabenak won the Star Champ Kart feature, Gina Mooi won Jr. Champs and Frank James Slabenak won the Jr. Sportsman Champs. |
